Johnson served in the Air Force from May 1991 to October 2002.[3] He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, then volunteered to deploy to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and finally reassigned to Hickman Air Force Base.[2] Johnson later enlisted in the United States Army and served from December 2004 to September 2010.[3] While serving in the Army, Johnson deployed to Iraq.[2]

Campaign themes
2014
Johnson listed the following issues on his campaign website:
- Education[4]
- Excerpt: "Our goal is to give every citizen in Wisconsin virtual access to education at every level of learning. Brick and mortar do not bind the classroom of the 21st century, instead its limitations tend to be networking and access to information itself. With such a robust networking and communication infrastructure we can now connect Wisconsin to a more advanced educational system that provides an all around equal opportunity."
- Job creation[5]
- Excerpt: "Our approach to job creation and reform is logical. Before we can make any promises, we will reexamine the Bureau of Labor Statistics Outlook: 1990-2005 projections as well as the 2005-2020 projections. By taking this approach, we can examine the '200 exogenous variables used to generate projections of the U.S. economy' (Bureau of Labor and Statistics [BLS], 1990, The U.S. economy in the 21st century, para. 5). Once we have determined the variables that impact the state of Wisconsin specifically and which scenario we are most closely related too, then we can then forge a clear path ahead."
