The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 4, 2014. Incumbent Georgene Louis was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Louis Tafoya was unopposed in the Republican primary. Louis defeated Tafoya in the general election.[5][6]

On the morning of February 14, 2022, Louis was stopped by Santa Fe police and arrested for aggravated drunken driving and driving without proof of registration and insurance.[9] She was arraigned and released later the same day.[10] Louis also issued an apology on February 14, 2022.[9]

Louis initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, but in May, she entered a no-contest plea to one charge of drunken driving. Louis was sentenced to 24 hours of community service and ordered to pay a $250 fine to the State Ethics Commission.[10][11]
