Campaign themes
2014
Sullivan's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Fight Against Overspending and Tax Hikes
- Excerpt: "There is a better path: we must rein in spending. If we had held the line on spending over the past decade, or at least kept it at the rate of inflation, we would be running a surplus today. Instead, despite our $8 billion backlog of unpaid bills, the Democrats increased spending by $2 billion in last year’s budget alone, a move I vehemently opposed. I am dedicated to fighting against higher taxes and increased spending. We need to cut spending and work to be more efficient in every department of government so that we can let the income tax hike expire. The recent pension reform was a step in the right direction, but we have much more work to do in order to put Illinois back on a path to sustainability."
Finally Get Property Taxes Under Control
- Excerpt: "I am committed to achieving property tax relief for you. I helped expand the property tax homeowner exemption for homeowners and for seniors. I am fighting against the recent court ruling that allows country clubs to assess their clubhouses at “zero value” which shifts more of the tax burden on surrounding homeowners. I also helped ensure that assessors could use foreclosures and short sales when making assessments, something they have not been able to do in the past, which will ensure that all homeowners enjoy relief on their taxes when neighborhood property values decrease."
Put Illinois Back on the Path to Prosperity
- Excerpt: "To turn around Illinois’ lagging economy, though, we must do more to address the hard costs that small businesses face so that our current businesses can expand and new businesses will want to locate in our state. This means actually reforming workers compensation, further addressing unemployment insurance, and reducing the burden onerous litigation places on businesses."
