One seat on the Appoquinimink School District Board of Education was up for general election on May 12, 2015. Incumbent Julie Johnson did not file to run for re-election, which left eight challengers who competed for the vacant at-large seat.

This was an unusually high number of candidates for one seat in the district, since no school board race over the previous 16 years garnered as many candidate filings per seat as 2015. From 1999 to 2014, each seat up for election in the district averaged fewer than three candidate filings, and only two elections had more than four candidates. In more than half of the races, candidates were unopposed or faced only one other candidate in their election bid.[1]

Primary information

  • A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Delaware utilizes a closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.[2][3][4]
