An effort to recall David Encinias in Bent County, Colo., from his position as sheriff was launched in February 2016.[1]
Randy Losey filed the recall petition with the Bent County Clerk on February 8 and had 60 days to collect the required number of signatures. The petition was initiated due to an increase in home invasions and break-ins in the City of Las Animas. Losey, whose shop was broken into twice, said the sheriff's office did not do a proper job handling the crimes. "I'm not saying that the sheriff is fully to blame for all of the crime going on in our community, but we have to start somewhere in order to reclaim our city," said Losey.[1]
The recall effort failed when proponents failed to turn in the petition by the April 8 deadline.[2]
Opponents
Former Las Animas mayor
Lawrence Sena, former mayor of Las Animas, wrote to the BC Democrat to voice his opposition to the recall of Sheriff David Encinias. He acknowledged the frustration of citizens over crime, and specifically burglaries, in the area, but wrote that the anger was being directed at the wrong person. He said people should be angry at the criminals and supported the idea of creating Neighborhood Watches. Below is an excerpt from Sena's letter to the editor:[3]
“ | During part of my tenure as mayor of Las Animas I had occasion to engage in many conversations with Sheriff Encinias regarding the enforcement of the city ordinances and often discussed the problem we were experiencing with burglaries. He always addressed any concerns I had and acted to the best of his and his deputies' abilities to resolve the issues confronting us. Burglaries were of great concern to him and me as well as they still are. I know efforts were made then and are still being made to solve them.[4] | ” |
