Recall reports

In June 2009, Utica, New York residents initiated a campaign to recall Utica Mayor David Roefaro. In July 2009, the initial supporter, William Newell, announced that he had abandoned his effort to recall the mayor. However, Susan Arcuri, a Utica resident and petition circulator, said that she would continue the campaign effort. The recall effort did not result in a recall election.

Background

Newell began a campaign to recall Mayor Roefaro on June 22, 2009. At the time, Newell said that he believed Roefaro was hiring and promoting family and friends. However, in late July, Newell said that he was abandoning his efforts because Arcuri has transformed the campaign into an "ego ridden personal attack campaign."[1] Arcuri and Newell, once part of the same campaign, splintered the campaign just prior to Newell's late July announcement to abandon the campaign.[2]

Signatures

Petition supporters had until July 21, 2009, 30 days after the recall campaign started, to submit a minimum of 2,800 signatures.[3] Despite the deadline, on July 21, recall supporters said that they planned to submit petition signatures by September 15, 2009. However, only signatures collected on or before August 15 would be considered legally valid.[4] Sufficient signatures were not submitted, and no recall election took place.
