This is a research page for collecting information to track the number of initiatives filed in each of the states with an initiative or referendum. This page is updated on the first business day of each month of 2022 through August and lists the number of proposed initiatives as of the first day of the month.

This page does count:

  • Initiatives that were filed in states with a rolling petition deadline that might still qualify for the 2022 ballot.[1]
  • Multiple versions of what appears to be basically the same initiative.[2]
  • Initiatives that have already qualified for a 2022 ballot.

Footnotes

  1. This is true even if sponsors missed their 2022 deadline, as long as they did have a chance of qualifying for the 2022 ballot.
  2. As evidenced by the fact that the multiple versions were filed by the same sponsor or group of sponsors and include very similar but not entirely identical language.
  3. See 2022 ballot measures and Potential 2022 ballot measures for information about legislative referrals that have qualified or might qualify for the 2022 ballot.
  4. This counts ballot initiatives filed with the title board, not those filed with the legislative council staff
  5. This does not count measures that submitted a draft for legislative research council comments but did not submit a final version for approval by the Secretary of State
  6. This counts all ITLs and ITPs filed for the 2022 ballot including duplicate filings.
