Tate Reeves (Republican Party) is the Governor of Mississippi. He assumed office on January 14, 2020. His current term ends on January 11, 2028.
Reeves (Republican Party) ran for re-election for Governor of Mississippi. He won in the general election on November 7, 2023.
Reeves' official website described him as "a conservative leader who has focused on the principles of guarding taxpayers’ dollars, improving educational opportunity, and growing new careers so that the state’s best and brightest can stay and raise their families at home."[1] During the 2022 legislative session, Reeves signed what the Associated Press called the state's largest-ever tax cut into law.[2]
Before beginning his career in politics, Reeves worked in the finance sector.[3] Reeves told the Delta Business Journal in 2019 that his early experience as an investment banker shaped his political views. "I also saw firsthand how government could help or hinder growth in a small business through regulations and restrictions. Seeing government and business intersect contributed to my belief that government doesn’t create jobs. It only creates an environment that helps people on Main Street create jobs for their community,” he said.[4]
Reeves was the first Republican elected as state treasurer in Mississippi history. He served in that position from 2004 to 2012, when he became lieutenant governor alongside Gov. Phil Bryant (R) for two terms. He was elected governor in 2019 alongside Republican majorities in both chambers of the state legislature, creating a Republican trifecta. His 5.1% margin of victory in 2019 was the closest of his political career and the closest gubernatorial election in Mississippi since 1999. He was elected treasurer in 2003 by a 6% margin of victory, and he won by at least 20% in all of his other campaigns.
Biography
Reeves was born in Rankin County, Mississippi, on June 5, 1974.[5] He graduated from Florence High School and received a bachelor's degree in economics from Millsaps College.[6] Following his graduation, Reeves became a chartered financial analyst.
Before holding public office, Reeves was an investment officer for Trustmark National Bank.[3] He also worked as an assistant vice president at AmSouth, a banking company, and as a senior investment analyst with the Investment Policy Committee.[3]
Reeves was the president of the National Association of State Treasurers from 2006 to 2007.[3]
