Samuel Blatchford
Samuel M. Blatchford (1820-1893) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the Supreme Court in 1882 after a nomination from President Chester Arthur. He served on the Supreme Court until his death on July 7, 1893. Prior to joining the court, Blatchford served on the United States Circuit Courts for the Second Circuit.[1]
Blatchford was one of three justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Arthur, though only two joined the court. He served on The Waite Court and The Fuller Court.[2]
Education
Blatchford received an undergraduate degree from Columbia College in 1837 and his legal education by reading law.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments
Supreme Court
Blatchford was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Chester Arthur on March 13, 1882. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 22, 1882, and received commission that same day. He served until his death on July 7, 1893.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice Edward Douglass White.
Second Circuit
Blatchford was nominated to the United States Circuit Courts for the Second Circuit by President Rutherford B. Hayes on February 15, 1878, to fill the vacancy left by Alexander Smith Johnson. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 4, 1878, and received commission that same day. Blatchford served on this court until March 22, 1882. He was succeeded by William James Wallace.[1]
Southern District of New York
Blatchford received a recess appointment to the Southern District of New York from President Andrew Johnson on May 3, 1867. On July 13, 1867, he was officially nominated. He was confirmed by the Senate on July 16, 1867, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until March 4, 1878.[1] He was succeeded to this post by William Gardner Choate.
