Robert Jones (Oregon)
Robert Edward Jones was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush (R). Jones took senior status on May 1, 2000, and left senior status on March 29, 2025 upon his death.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Portland, Oregon, Jones graduated from the University of Hawaii with his bachelor's degree in 1949 and from the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College with his J.D. in 1953.[2]
Military service
Jones served as a law specialist in U.S. Naval Reserve from 1945 to 1947 and from 1949 to 1967. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve's judge advocate general corps from 1967 to 1987. He served as a captain in the Reserve throughout his career.[2]

Jones was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on February 20, 1990, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Oregon vacated by Judge James Burns. The American Bar Association rated Jones Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Jones' nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 4, 1990, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on April 26, 1990. Jones was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on April 27, 1990, and he received his commission on April 30, 1990. Jones elected to take senior status beginning on May 1, 2000. Jones was succeeded in this position by Judge Michael Mosman.[2][3][4]
