2,765 candidates filed to run for the 1,167 senate seats that were up for election on November 2, 2010.

The figures in the chart below represent the number of candidates who filed to run for office by going through the steps necessary to secure a spot on the ballot. Those steps differ from state-to-state but in most cases, nominating signatures must be filed. In some cases, candidates who had filed to run for state senate withdrew their candidacy or had their name removed from the ballot because of a successful challenge to their nominating signatures.

The chart is a count of candidates who filed to run, not a count of how many candidates were left standing after withdrawals and challenges.

Breakdown by political party

1,229 Democrats and 1,325 Republicans filed to run for state senate in 2010. 122 candidates filed to run as Independents (with no party affiliation). Additionally, 11 other political parties are fielding candidates in the 2010 state senate races. The Libertarian Party has the most such candidates, with 42 candidates in 15 states.

Note that in this chart, the total number of candidates that filed to run for office in a particular state does not give the reader any information about the distribution of these candidates over the different senate seats up for election in that state. As an example, in a state with 20 Republican candidates and 20 senate elections, you can't infer that a Republican ran in each of the state's 20 senate elections. Rather, the figure of 20 Republicans might mean that 5 Republicans ran in one primary and in 4 districts, no Republican filed to run.

The information for New York in the chart was the last to be updated. New York practices fusion voting -- where candidates have multiple parties attached to their name. For the purposes of this table, minority parties in New York were only considered if the candidate was running for that party alone. As of August 25, 2010, the New York lists have now been updated.
