Candidate Connection

Mike Mullen completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Mullen's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Political Reform Access to Healthcare Education

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Healthcare and reforming our political system.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Paul Tsongas' The Road from here resonated for me as I identified with his liberal social policies but also recognizing the need for practical and fiscally responsible solutions.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

While understanding the importance of vision I believe I'm able to work for practical and iterative solutions that bring value earlier in the process. I'm able to examine issues and situations on their own merits without a dogmatic lens.

What legacy would you like to leave?

Help create an environment of collaboration where common ground can be found and continual progress can be made.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I remember my mom getting a portable black and white television to watch the Watergate hearings at the kitchen table.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Clerk at Osco Drug, three years off an on during school breaks. Also mowed lawns and refereed soccer before then.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Thanksgiving because it is great to get together with my family as well as having the four day break to decompress.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Almost anything by Kurt Vonnegut.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Gandalf

What process do you favor for redistricting?

I think there needs to be non partisan redistricting that allows fair representation of the citizens.

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

While collecting signatures to get on the ballot at a local town festival I spoke with a retired woman who had immigrated to the United States as a young girl. She was very compelling outlining the view of an immigrant coming here to find a better life but also highlighting that a large part of the responsibility for the current situation with so many undocumented immigrants is a system and society that is complicit in allowing and supporting this. Pointing out that any solution needs to be holistic and not singling out only those who undocumented.
