Michigan House of Representatives elections, 2014
The Republican Party held both houses and the governorship in Michigan, with Republican nominees also dominating the Michigan Supreme Court, despite the elections being officially nonpartisan. This combination makes the state government one of nine categorized as a trifecta plus.
The Democratic Party was looking to break the Republican stronghold in 2014, and needing to gain five of the Republicans' seats to do so. Michigan is a state with a lot of incumbent turnover due to term limits, and the number of seats that were competitive or mildly competitive in 2012 presented the Democrats with opportunities to take the State House.
The Michigan government had only been a trifecta since 2011, with the election of a Republican governor and lower house. Among the two houses and the governorship, the State House had the least party stability.
Out of 110 representatives, 40 incumbents did not seek re-election. The high number is due to the three-term limit for the chamber. Of the 40, 20 were Democrats, 19 were Republicans, and one was an independent and former Democrat who ran for State Senate as a Democrat.
The Michigan House of Representatives was one of 20 state legislative chambers noted by Ballotpedia staff as being a 2014 battleground chamber. The Michigan House had a difference in partisan balance between Democrats and Republicans of nine seats, which amounted to 8.2 percent of the chamber. In 2012, a total of 21 districts were competitive or mildly competitive. There were eight districts where the margin of victory was 5 percent or less in the 2012 elections. Another 13 districts had a margin of victory between 5 and 10 percent.
Elections for the Michigan House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election was held on August 5, 2014, and a general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was April 22, 2014.
Following the general election, the Republican Party retained control of the Michigan House of Representatives. The Republicans increased their seats from 59 to 63. The Democratic Party lost three seats, the party's count dropping from 50 to 47. The Republicans gained one seat held by an Independent.
Incumbents retiring
A total of 41 incumbents did not run for re-election in 2014. Those incumbents were:

Qualifications
Section 7 of Article 4 of the Michigan Constitution states, "Each senator and representative must be a citizen of the United States, at least 21 years of age, and an elector of the district he represents. The removal of his domicile from the district shall be deemed a vacation of the office. No person who has been convicted of subversion or who has within the preceding 20 years been convicted of a felony involving a breach of public trust shall be eligible for either house of the legislature."
Competitiveness
Candidates unopposed by a major party
In all 110 districts up for election in 2014, candidates from both major parties ran for election. No candidate was uncontested in November.

- District 72: Incumbent Ken Yonker defeated Gabe Hudson in the Republican primary.
- District 78: Incumbent Dave Pagel defeated Jim Walker in the Republican primary.
- District 89: Incumbent Amanda Price defeated Matthew Wiedenhoeft in the Republican primary.
- District 107: Incumbent Frank Foster was defeated by Lee Chatfield in the Republican primary.
Retiring incumbents
Forty-one incumbent representatives did not run for re-election, while 70 (63.6%) ran for re-election. A list of those incumbents (19 Democrats, 21 Republicans and one independent) can be found above.
Context
A Ballotpedia analysis of partisan balance between 1992 and 2013 shows that the House was the most volatile of the group comprising the House, Senate and Governor. While the Senate was held by Republicans for the entire period, Republicans controlled the House on-and-off for 13 years and the Democrats held it on-and-off for seven; the 1993-1994 session was conducted at an even balance. Michigan has been a Republican state government trifecta since 2011, when Gov. Rick Snyder took office and the House returned to Republican control.
The 2014 election was the second held following redistricting, which worked to GOP advantage in the House despite the presidential vote going for Barack Obama (D) by about eight percent. Ten incumbents, some term-limited, retired from the House in the hopes of winning election to the Senate. Twenty-three incumbents in all were term-limited.[1][2]
The 2014 election was also the first since the passage of right-to-work legislation, which contributed to decreased approval for Snyder. Under the law, workers cannot be required to pay union membership dues, although numerous unions locked in new contracts requiring payments before the law took effect in March 2013. In 2013, Michigan ranked fifth in union membership, which increased by 4,000 to 633,000.[1][3][4] Some Republicans faced difficult primaries due to their support of Medicaid expansion.[5]
Races to Watch
For Democrats to pick up the House, they needed to maintain their 50 seats and add 11. There was one outgoing independent, District 3 incumbent John Olumba, who left the Democratic caucus in 2013.
Although their districts were not considered at all competitive per Ballotpedia's criteria, primary challenges against Republican incumbents Ken Yonker (District 72) and Lisa Posthumus Lyons (District 86) centered around support of Medicaid expansion and Common Core threatened their seats.[5]
- District 23: Pat Somerville, who represents a part of the Downriver area south of Detroit, won the tightest Republican victory in 2012 with a margin of just 1 percent;[6] he defeated Tom Boritzki (D) in the general election.[7]
- District 63: House Speaker Jase Bolger (R) reached his term limit, leaving an open seat in the Kalamazoo area. Bill Farmer (D) narrowly lost to Bolger in 2012 after the Speaker was investigated for his role in attempting to throw an election in District 76. Farmer was defeated by David Maturen (R) in the general election.[8]
- District 76: The Republican Party called Donijo DeJonge (R) one of 14 "Right Women, Right Now" candidates nationwide. She unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Winnie Brinks (D-District 76). DeJonge defeated two primary challengers, while Brinks, who won the seat in 2012, ran unopposed for her party's nomination.[9]
- District 91: In 2012, Collene Lamonte (D) defeated first-term incumbent Holly Hughes (R) by the slimmest margin of any Michigan House race that year, 0.83 percent.[6] Hughes fought back for a rematch in the western swing district after fending off primary competition from Kevin Erb and Max Riekse.[7] Hughes' attempt back into the State House was successful, as she defeated Lamonte in the general election.
The Lamonte-Hughes race and the Brinks-DeJonge race were top priorities for Michigan House Democrats, according to Rep. Brandon Dillon, the caucus' campaign chairman.
