Michael Amrozowicz was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 31 of the Illinois State Senate.

Biography

Amrozowicz earned his B.S. from Southern Illinois University and his MBA from Cameron University. His professional experience includes owning and operating a small business for 12 years. He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy as Chief Machinist's Mate for 21 years.[1]

Campaign themes

2016

Amrozowicz's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Jobs and Economy

  • As someone who owned a small business for 12 years, I know Illinois needs to end the job crushing over-taxation and over-regulation. As your State Senator, one of my top priorities will be fighting to fix our economy so we can get jobs and family incomes growing again.

Fiscal Responsibility and Balanced Budgets

  • As your State Senator, I will fight to reduce the cost of government, end wasteful spending, and get the economy growing again. If Illinois had only grown at the national average for the last 15 years we would have had $19 billion more in revenue and no bill backlog. That's why growth and economic reform are so important to the budget process.

Tax Reform and Property Tax Relief

  • Illinois has the highest total taxpayer burden in the country, when you add up the state income, property, and sales. Politicians across this state have continually asked for more money from taxpayers, without providing value. And yet, our debt continues to grow. We don’t need higher taxes, we need to reduce spending and reduce taxes on hardworking families. Illinois now has the highest property tax burden in the nation and, out of 102 counties in the state, Lake County has the 5th highest property taxes in Illinois. Tax reform should start with an immediate property tax freeze along with reforms to allow local governments to reduce costs so, sooner rather than later, we can actually reduce property taxes.

Term Limits and Citizen Control of Government

  • First, I am a big proponent of term limits at all levels and for all politicians. One of the reasons politicians get so out of touch is they spend too long in office. Over time they end up representing the special interests and their party bosses, rather than the people back home in their district. Too often politicians forget that their only boss is the people and that their first job is to represent them. I've promised to term limit myself to 10 years.
  • Second, I'm fighting to end gerrymandering. Fair-map reform is one of the most important things we can do to return to citizen control of government. Voters should pick politicians, politicians shouldn't pick voters. Only 41% of legislative races statewide in 2016 even have two candidates on the ballot and most of those aren't truly competitive due to rigged districts. This has to end and I will fight tooth and nail for non-partisan map drawing.[2]
