Three seats on the Mission Consolidated Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. In the Place 1 race, Roy Vela defeated fellow challenger Marcie González Acosta. In the Place 6 race, newcomer Petra B. Ramirez triumphed over challengers A.C. Pruneda and Rigo Sariñana. Newcomer Herminia R. (Minnie) Rodgers won the Place 7 election over incumbent Oscar Martinez and challenger Rick Venecia.[1]
About the district
Mission Consolidated Independent School District is located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The county seat of Hidalgo County is Edinburg. The county's population was 774,769 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]
Demographics
Hidalgo County underperforms in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 15.6 percent of Hidalgo County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Hidalgo County had a median income of $33,218 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Hidalgo County was 35.0 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Mission Board of Trustees consists of seven members. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. They serve four-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for three seats. Four seats will be on the ballot in May 2016.[3]
A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[4]
