The Missouri Election of County Sheriff Amendment may appear on the ballot in Missouri as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on November 3, 2026.
This amendment would provide for citizens to elect the county sheriff, prohibit the removal of the sheriff except by a writ of quo warranto, and recognize the office of sheriff as part of the administration of justice.[1]

Amending the Missouri Constitution
A simple majority vote is required during one legislative session for the Missouri General Assembly to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot. That amounts to a minimum of 82 votes in the Missouri House of Representatives and 18 votes in the Missouri State Senate, assuming no vacancies. Amendments do not require the governor's signature to be referred to the ballot.
