An effort in Huachuca City, Arizona, to recall Mayor Ken Taylor and Town Council members Cynthia Butterworth, Jane Hjeldness, and Johann Wallace was initiated in July 2017.[1]

A recall effort against Taylor took place in 2015 and resulted in Taylor's retention as mayor. A 2011 effort resulted in the retention of Byron Robertson, who was Taylor's predecessor in office.

Recall supporters

Nerhan, a former mayor, made the following statement to local media about the recall effort:

They are supposed to be serving without special interests, and that’s not happening. There are other people in this town who feel the same way about this council that I do, and I represent all of them. I am the voice of all the oppressed people in this town who are afraid to speak out and stand up for themselves.[1][2]

—George Nerhan (2017)

Nerhan has disagreed with the town council over citations he received due to property ordinance violations. He argues that the town is targeting low-income residents with citations including veterans and the elderly.[1]

Recall opponents

Taylor made the following comments about the recall effort:

I can understand how a person could feel targeted when they own more property than anyone else in town. But having said that, if Mr. Nerhan were in compliance with town codes, there would be no issue with his properties.[1][2]

—Ken Taylor (2017)

Nerhan told local media that he held enough signatures to require a recall election for all four officials on July 29, 2017.[1] The recall effort ended after recall organizers improperly submitted the signatures.[3]
