What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
As Treasurer, my top priority will be to protect the state's Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund for our future generations. I will continue the work I've already started during my campaign, reaching out to our local officials to see what economic barriers their populations are facing. The day I sent letters to leaders in rural Arizona asking what the executive branch could do for them, I got immediate responses from people wanting to make a difference and excited that there might actually be someone at the state level with their interests at heart. I will also work to establish a robust, public community banking system in our state. Through community banking we will be able to restore basic banking services to much of rural Arizona, truly invest in student success by offering actually affordable borrowing options to college students, and bring back investment into our communities through capital and favorable terms for small business, housing, and community development.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Community Banking. We need to be investing in our human capital, instead of letting speculators engage in casino-style gambling with our money on Wall Street. Arizona can establish a public community banking system that works in partnership with private institutions to ensure our communities have access to local bank and credit union branches, along with the convenience of enhanced borrowing options. This is the best way to bring back investment to the communities the establishment has ignored.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Elected officials must be trustworthy and represent the true interests of their constituents. The current treasurer has been caught double-dipping; taking hundreds of thousands from our university system for a job she's not doing. This continues the trend of a long line of treasurers who have abused their position for financial gain. We need to put an end to this bad behavior and bring back integrity to the office.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a lawyer and small business person with an MBA degree. I have spent more than 25 years enforcing property taxes in Arizona, and have written legislation and the only legal reference book on the subject. I have chosen to run for Treasurer because I think tax and fiscal policy in our state has been on the wrong track for too long, and the Treasurer's office can serve a constructive role in getting us back on the right track.
