One down ballot state executive position was up for election in the state of Maryland in 2014. The general election took place on November 4, 2014. Franchot won in the general election.
The 2014 race was a rematch of the 2010 election, when incumbent Peter Franchot (D) defeated William H. Campbell (R) for a second term. Franchot and Campbell were joined by independent candidate Anjali Reed Phukan.
A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Maryland utilizes a closed primary system. Although parties may hold open primaries, parties generally permit only registered party members to vote in their primaries.[1][2]
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article. A primary election was scheduled for June 24, but there was not a competitive primary for the comptroller's office.
