Two of the five seats on the Lake County Schools Board of Education were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. Three newcomers ran for the District 2 seat in the primary election on August 30, 2016: Kristi Burns, Pernell Mitchell, and Sandi Moore. Burns and Moore received the most votes, allowing them to advance to the general. Burns won the general election. In District 4, four newcomers competed for the seat in the primary: James Myers, Joan Rintlemann, Lou Buigas, and Sandy Gamble. Myers and Gamble advanced to the general election, with Gamble emerging victorious.[1][2]
District 2 incumbent Rosanne Brandeburg and District 4 incumbent Debbie Stivender both did not file for re-election, guaranteeing two newcomers to the board.
Florida school board elections function differently than elections of this kind in most states. Primary elections for Florida school boards were held on August 30, 2016, though primaries are functionally general elections. A general election was held on November 8, 2016, between the top two vote recipients in any race where no candidate receives the majority of votes. Unopposed elections were canceled and did not appear on the ballot. Special elections were held in conjunction with some general elections to fill vacancies.
