Lowell Reed, Jr. was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan (R). He served on senior status until April 11, 2020, when he died.[1]

Early life and education

A native Pennsylvanian, Reed graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with his bachelor's degree in 1952 and later graduated from the Temple University School of Law with a J.D. degree in 1958.[1]

Military service

Reed served as a U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander in the Division of Naval Intelligence, from 1953 to 1957.[1]

Professional career

Reed began his legal career as a law clerk for Common Pleas Judge Ethan Allen Doty in 1958. From 1958 to 1962, Reed was the corporation trial counsel for PMA Insurance Group based in Philadelphia prior to entering into private practice in the State of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1988. In addition to his legal work, Reed became a lecturer in law at the Temple University Beasley School of Law from 1966 to 1981 and served on the faculty advisory board of the Academy of Advocacy at Temple University.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Pennsylvania

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and John Heinz III, Reed was nominated by President Ronald Reagan (R) on December 18, 1987, to a seat vacated by Judge Tony Scirica as Scirica was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. Reed was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 19, 1988, and received commission on April 20, 1988. Reed assumed senior status on June 21, 1999. His service ended when he died on April 11, 2020.
