Noteworthy events
Removal from Democratic committees following allegations of profane text messages (2021)
On October 18, 2021, the Cook County Democratic Party removed Gardiner from all Democratic committee assignments after they reviewed allegations that Gardiner used threatening and vulgar language to describe colleagues and constituents. “There are numerous examples of personal invectives and insults, uncontrolled rants, and verbal abuses accompanied by boorish, obnoxious, repugnant, rude, and vulgar conduct over the past two years,” the party said in a statement.[1]
In September 2021, Gardiner issued a statement apologizing for the language he used but denied acting on any retaliation threats: “I take full responsibility for my offensive words in those messages. I want to make it clear that I have never acted on those rants, however they should not have been expressed and it certainly was not my intention to demean anyone.”[2] As of October 21, 2021, Ballotpedia could not identify a statement from Gardiner in response his removal from committee assignments.
