Two of the five seats on the Jefferson County Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Place 1 incumbent Jennifer Parsons did not file for re-election and Place 5 incumbent Jacqueline Smith (D) won election without opposition.
Ronnie Dixon (R), Donna Pike (R) and Samuel Staggs (R) were running to replace Parsons in the primary election on March 1, 2016. Dixon and Pike advanced to a primary runoff election on April 12, 2016, because no candidate received a majority of the vote. Pike won the runoff election and won without opposition in the general election.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Jefferson County Board of Education consists of five members elected to six-year terms. One seat was up for election in 2014, and two seats were up for election in 2018. Four of the five board members reside within the county, while the remaining member represents an area overlapping Birmingham's city school district. Board members cannot be employed in another capacity by the district during their service.[2]
Prospective board candidates were required to file with county party officials by November 6, 2015. Candidates must be 18 years old and reside in their counties for at least one year prior to the election.[3]

Jefferson County School District is located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The county seat is Birmingham. Jefferson County was home to 660,793 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the second-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 36,203 students.[7]
Demographics
Jefferson County outperformed the state of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.0 percent of Jefferson County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 22.6 percent for Alabama as a whole. The median household income in Jefferson County was $45,429, compared to $43,253 for the state of Alabama. The poverty rate in Jefferson County was 18.0 percent, compared to 18.6 percent for the entire state.[6]
