An effort to recall to recall Police Chief Jeffrey Carl Guilbeau did not go to a vote in Grand Coteau, Louisiana.[1]
Recall supporters
Petitions listed malfeasance in office, distribution of Schedule 1 narcotics, and theft as reasons for recalling Guilbeau.[1] In July 2023, Guilbeau was charged with nine counts relating to the distribution of illegal narcotics.[2] Guilbeau was placed on administrative leave on October 18, 2023.[1] On June 10, 2024, Guilbeau pleaded guilty to felony charges of malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice.[3]

No specific grounds are required for recall in Louisiana. The recall process starts by filing a copy of the recall petition with the Louisiana Secretary of State. The number of signatures required on the petition depends on the size of the jurisdiction, with the smallest jurisdictions (fewer than 1,000 eligible voters) requiring signatures equal to 40% of eligible voters in the jurisdiction and the largest jurisdictions (100,000 or more eligible voters) requiring signatures equal to 20% of eligible voters in the jurisdiction.[4] Recall supporters have 180 days to circulate petitions.[5]
Petitions in the recall effort against Guilbeau were filed on September 11, 2023. Recall organizers were required to submit at least 300 valid signatures to put the recall on the ballot.[1]
