June 5, 2012 ballot measures in California
June 5, 2012 was the date of California's 2012 primary. The statewide ballot featured contests on Proposition 28 (Term Limits) and Proposition 29 (Tax on Tobacco), as well as the 2012 presidential contest, and primary contests for U.S. Congress, state senate and state assembly.
In addition to those contests, many voters saw local ballot measures on their ballot. Local jurisdictions in California have a great deal of flexibility about when they schedule elections on local ballot measures. This sometimes results in more than a dozen dates in a particular year with local ballot measure elections. For example, in 2010, there were sixteen different dates with local ballot measure elections. In 2011, there were 13 different election dates. However, the June election date typically features more than any other date, with the exception of the typically higher number appearing on the year's November ballot. By way of comparison, on June 8, 2010, there were 108 local ballot measures in 31 of California's 58 counties.
The deadline for submitting local ballot measures for the June 5 ballot was March 9, 2012.
Several local ballot measures on the June 5 ballot attracted national attention. These included two pension reform measures, San Diego Proposition B and San Jose Measure B, and a Marijuana Dispensaries Ordinance in Kern County.[1][2]
