I'm an attorney and I used to work in the Wisconsin Legislature as a staffer. I live in Cottage Grove, WI, with my wife.
  • I'm a true fiscal conservative.
  • Sound financial management at the state level is critical to taxpayer success.
  • This office doesn't need to be expanded. The only employee is the Treasurer, and I'm equipped to handle the job.
Sound fiscal management and small government.
The Office of the Treasurer was created in Wisconsin's first State Constitution. This office is the only one which focuses solely on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands and its trust fund.
Reliability, responsibility, and fiscal conservatism.
Being an effective member of a board and having a proven work ethic.
Serving on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands and managing the trust fund.
Because only one person staffs the office, the Treasurer, it's crucial to choose a person with a strong professional ethic who will be responsible and accountable for the entire 4-year term.
Yes, particularly since the only employee is the Treasurer. There is not staff. Understanding the mission of this office, how to interact with the legislature and executive branch, and being a skilled financial manager are all beneficial to best serve taxpayers as Treasurer.
The most important skills and expertise for this position include having board membership experience, since the Treasurer is one of 3 commissioners on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands. It's also important to understand how financial investments work to best manage these assets for the future.

Campaign website

John Leiber's campaign website stated the following:

Reliable. Responsible. Ready.

We need a Treasurer who will focus on the actual duties of the office, and not try to grow government. Rather than grow government and add new programs, I will carry out the duties of the Treasurer and advocate for saving your tax dollars.

As a true fiscal conservative, I am committed to the sound financial management of assets overseen by the Office of the Treasurer and the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands. This investment needs to be well managed and robust both now and in the future. We need a Treasurer who can properly manage your money.

The only person who works in the Office of the Treasurer is the Treasurer. You can count on me to administer this office without growing government and without using it as a stepping stone to another office.

We need a conservative administration in Wisconsin and 2022 can be the first time in decades we hold all 5 executive offices. I will be an asset to the party ticket in November, not jeopardizing this opportunity for conservative leadership.

Leiber took positions in opposition to the Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) movement.

State financial officers, including treasurers, auditors, and controllers, are responsible for auditing other government offices, managing payroll, and overseeing pensions. In some states, certain SFOs are also responsible for investing state retirement and trust funds.

Leiber’s immediate predecessor, Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski (D), made ESG issues a priority while she was the state treasurer. Godlewski's 2022 campaign website said: “[as] Wisconsin State Treasurer, Sarah’s first major act was to overturn a Republican gag order that prevented climate change from being considered when making investments.” Aaron Richardson (D), the candidate Leiber defeated in the 2022 race for state treasurer, had pledged to continue Godlewski’s ESG priorities.[6][7]

Shortly before taking office as treasurer, Leiber said: “I don't think we should be trying to tailor our investments to fit some political goal. I think we should be looking at maximizing the returns on the investment because that's what benefits the people of Wisconsin.”[8]

A Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel analysis of Leiber reported that this position put him “at a stark contrast to Democrats who have called on the treasurer to take up a more active role in rolling out social programs and investing in green energy and climate resiliency initiatives.”[9]
