Plante is a former Democratic member of the Maine House of Representatives, representing District 145 from 2012 to 2014.

The signature filing deadline for party candidates wishing to run in this election was March 17, 2014. The deadline for write-in candidates to run in the primary election was April 28, 2014, and the deadline for non-party candidates to run in the general election was June 2, 2014. The deadline for write-in candidates to run in the general election was September 22, 2014. District 145 incumbent Joshua Plante was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
