The Iowa Commissioner of Insurance is a state executive position in the Iowa state government.

The insurance commissioner oversees companies and individuals in the sale of insurance in Iowa and has general control over all aspects of their business, from the forms they use to the rates they charge. The Insurance Division also has statutory authority over many activities related to the sale of securities and other regulated products in the state.[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Doug Ommen. Ommen was appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad (R) in December 2016. He served as interim commissioner until becoming commissioner on January 30, 2017.[2]

Authority

The Iowa Commissioner of Insurance's powers, term of office, etc. are derived from Iowa Administrative Code, Division of Insurance 191, Chapter 1.1.

Chapter 1, Section 1:

The insurance division is headed by the commissioner of insurance who is assisted by a first deputy commissioner and other deputy and assistant commissioners.[3]

Duties

The mission statement of the Iowa Insurance Division is as follows: "The Iowa Insurance Division shall protect consumers through consumer education and by effectively and efficiently providing a fair, flexible and positive regulatory environment."[1]
