Primary election

Hawaii was one of 21 states to use a strictly closed primary system. Voters were required to register to vote in the primary by July 12, 2012, which was 30 days before the primary took place.[1] (Information about registering to vote)
General election

The deadline to register to vote was 29 days prior to the election day, which in 2012 was October 8.[2]

Voting absentee

Hawaii conducts its elections by mail. All eligible voters automatically receive mail ballots, which must be returned election officials by close of polls on Election Day.[4]
Voting early

Hawaii is one of 34 states that permits early voting with no specific restrictions as to who can vote early. Early voting begins 14 days before an election and ends three days prior to Election Day.[5]
