Harry Andrew Blackmun (1908 - 1999) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1970 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon. He assumed senior status on August 3, 1994, and served until his death on March 4, 1999. At the time of nomination, Blackmun was a judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.[1]

Blackmun was one of six justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Nixon, though only four were confirmed. Blackmun served during The Burger Court and The Rehnquist Court.[2]

Blackmun received his undergraduate and LL.B. degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Law School.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Supreme Court

Justice Blackmun was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Richard M. Nixon on April 15, 1970, to a seat vacated by Justice Abe Fortas. Blackmun was confirmed by the Senate on May 12, 1970, and received his commission on May 14, 1970. He assumed senior status on August 3, 1994, and served until his death on March 4, 1999.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice Stephen Breyer.

Eighth Circuit

Blackmun was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 18, 1959, to a seat vacated by Justice John Benjamin Sanborn. Blackmun was confirmed by the Senate on September 14, 1959, and received his commission on September 21, 1959. His service on the court ended on June 8, 1970, when he was appointed to the Supreme Court.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice Donald Ross.
