|I am running for City Attorney for the people of Long Beach…not the special interests. My name is Gerrie Schipske. I am a native of Long Beach and have practiced law for over 32 years – winning numerous cases at the state and federal levels. In 1995, I was sworn into the United States Supreme Court Bar and honored that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated at my ceremony. Following the Supreme Court swearing-in, I returned to Long Beach and worked in government, non-profit and business organizations providing legal and legislative counsel. I was named by the President to the U.S. Attorney General’s National Advisory Council on Violence Against Women because of my work here in Long Beach to change how sexual assault and domestic violence cases were handled by the Long Beach Police Department.
I am the ONLY candidate for City Attorney who:
- Has more than 32 years of legal, legislative, and administrative experience at every level of government and private industry.
- Was honored at The White House by the President as a “Champion of Change for Open Government” for 8 years on the City Council.
- Stood up for Long Beach taxpayers and fought the illegal surcharge put on water rates. My legal team won and now the City must return over $30 million dollars.
See www.trustgerrie.com
- Anti-Corruption; to ensure that Long Beach City government is open, transparent, and accountable, not to mention ethical.
- Fiscal Responsibility and Accountability: to ensure that every tax dollar is spent effectively. I will roll back the City Attorney's excessive salary of $319,000 which is the highest salary of any elected official in California. I will also provide a public accounting the excessive outside legal counsel costs for a department that has 25 full time attorneys.
- Aggressive, Pro-Active Risk Management: to prevent not payout claims we need to utilize Enterprise Risk Management to fully assess and correct our liabilities.
Making local government open, transparent, and accountable so that people can trust and participate fully in their government.
The City Attorney is the sole legal advisor to a major, charter city in California. The City of Long Beach also has an airport and a major port and is the site of numerous oil drilling areas, some of which sit in State Tidelands, so this office is extremely involved in a variety of legal issues impacting both the City and the State.
I would have to say Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg because of her intellect, her dedication to the law, and her work on behalf of women's rights. I am particularly fond of her quote: “I would like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability.” “Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means don’t do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived.”
It may be old fashion, but from my earliest days I have always subscribed to the philosophy outlined for me during the 12 years of being a proud member of the Girl Scouts:
"You have the power and means to give on the most valuable gifts in the world -- the gift of service. While material things are necessary and often nice to have, human beings need more than possessions. They often need sympathy and understanding. They need friends who care enough about them to show it by doing something in practical, helpful ways. Whether the service you offer big or small, it is an act of kindness. It is a translation of understanding into action. It is one of the most valuable gifts you can give because it is something of yourself."
Transparency, openness, and the ability to listen.
Tenacity, honesty, advocacy.
Appropriately advise and counsel the Mayor, City Council, and appointees to City Committees, Commissions, and Boards.
Defend the City of Long Beach in all levels of the court system.
Educate City elected officials and employees concerning open meeting laws, public records act, campaign finance law and the consequences of violation.
Aggressively assist in proactive risk management to prevent claims instead of just paying them. Assess causes and remedies to prevent future recurrences.
Educate the community about the role of their City Attorney and how to full participate in local government.
Somehow I made a difference in the lives of others.
I was 11 when my father and mother packed up me and my two younger siblings to drive up to Los Angeles Airport. They were taking us to meet and greet Senator John Kennedy who was flying in for the Democratic Convention. My mother had been registering voters after church on Sunday so this was an important event for her. We parked on the tarmac (no security in those days) and then stood out on the landing field for several hours in the heat singing "He has high hopes." He finally arrived and my father was able to capture the moment on his 8mm camera. He held my baby sister on his shoulders and wound up on the front page of most newspapers because of an AP photograph. Three years later, I was standing on the playground at school when over the PA our principal announced we needed to return to the classroom as President Kennedy had been shot and we needed to pray for his recovery.
I cleaned hundreds of pounds of shrimp for a restaurant and also clean the grease traps and drains. I was 16 years old.
I love all of the books I have written on the history of Long Beach because they document the people who made the City out of a marsh field.
She Hulk. Attorney at Law.
"Can't Turn Back" by Meg Christian and Holly Near.
Weight but I'm still working on it. LOL.
During this campaign, I have learned that not many voters realize Long Beach has an elected City Attorney. That the Office of City Attorney includes 65 employees, including 25 attorneys, and a budget of $12.2 million. They also do not understand the scope of powers and responsibilities of the City Attorney and that chief among those are to ensure that local government is open, transparent, and accountable.
Absolutely, especially for a City Attorney who must provide counsel to the City Council, Mayor, City Manager, and appointees to City Commissions and Boards. You must know government to be able to give appropriate counsel and advice.
You must understand how local government operates and the pressures that elected officials experience which requires the ability to appropriately advise on what actions they can or cannot take to achieve their legislative goals.
