Structure

Mission

As of 2025, the Georgia Department of Education had no mission statement, but their website read:[1]

There are 1.7 million students in Georgia’s public schools – and it’s our goal at the Georgia Department of Education to improve outcomes and expand opportunities for each one of them. Through child-focused and classroom-centered policies, a strong focus on the foundations, and increased relevance and opportunities in the later grades, we’re working to ensure all students graduate ready to contribute to their communities and live fulfilling, productive lives.

We are focused on preparing students for life, not a test – and making sure that all schools have the resources they need to provide every child with a high-quality public education.[2]

Superintendent

The current Georgia State Superintendent of Schools is Richard Woods (R). Woods assumed office in 2015.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of 16 members, including the superintendent of schools and the Georgia Teacher of the Year as an ex-officio member.[3] The other members of the board are representatives for each of the 14 congressional districts. They are appointed by the governor with the consent of the State Senate for seven-year terms. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[4]
