An electoral winning streak can be defined as when candidates from a single party win two or more consecutive elections for the same office, including special elections and recall elections. This page details the longest Democratic and Republican winning streaks for gubernatorial elections in each state.[1] Winning streaks listed in bold are ongoing. This page is updated after each election year.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Eighteen states have record-long winning streaks for one party, which are ongoing, including 13 states with record-long Republican streaks and five with record-long Democratic streaks.
  • South Dakota and Utah Republicans are tied with 12 consecutive wins for the longest currently-running winning streaks. Utah's streak is the longest Republican streak in state history.
  • Oregon and Washington Democrats are tied with 11 wins each for the longest currently-running Democratic streak. This is the longest Democratic streak in the history of both states.
  • The longest gubernatorial winning streak in U.S. history is 52 elections for Georgia Democrats between 1871 and 1998. The longest gubernatorial winning streak for Republicans is 49 elections in Vermont between 1867 and 1960.
