Three of the seven seats on the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Place 4 incumbent Jaime Solis faced challengers Robert Pena Jr., Arnulfo Rios Jr., and Ramiro Guerra. The Place 6 race included incumbent Carmen Gonzalez and challenger Carlos Jasso. Newcomers Miguel Farias and Luis Alamia ran for the Place 7 seat. Pena, Gonzalez, and Farias won their respective seats.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of seven at-large members elected to four-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[2]

The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[3]

Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District is located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The county seat is Edinburg. Hidalgo County was home to 842,304 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 37th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 34,104 students.[7]

Demographics

Hidalgo County underperformed in comparison to the state of Texas in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 16.4 percent of Hidalgo County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Hidalgo County was $34,952, compared to $52,576 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Hidalgo County was 33.5 percent, compared to 15.9 percent for the entire state.[6]
