Four seats on the Eden Prairie Schools Board of Education were up for general election on November 3, 2015.

The seats of incumbents Karla Bratrud, Dave Espe, John Estall and Holly Parker were up for election.[1] Espe, who was the only incumbent who filed for re-election, faced challengers Asad Aliweyd, Murshid Barud, John Kohner, Greg Lehman, Jeffery Saxton and Adam Seidel for the four at-large seats. Barud previously ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board in 2013. Espe, Kohner, Lehman and Seidel won the four seats.

Eden Prairie Schools is located in central Minnesota in Hennepin County. The county seat is Minneapolis. This county was home to 1,152,425 residents in 2010, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Eden Prairie Schools was the 17th-largest school district in Minnesota and served 9,536 students.[3]

Demographics

Hennepin County outperformed the rest of Minnesota in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 45.8 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 32.6 percent for Minnesota as a whole. The median household income in Hennepin County was $64,403, compared to $59,836 for the state of Minnesota. The poverty rate was 12.8 percent, compared to 11.5 percent for the entire state.[2]

The Eden Prairie Board of Education consists of seven members elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 3, 2015. Four seats were up for election in 2015.[1]

School board candidates had to file nomination documents during the candidate filing period, which began on July 28, 2015, and ended on August 11, 2015. The deadline for candidates to withdraw was August 13, 2015.[5]

Endorsements

Incumbent Dave Espe and challengers Asad Aliweyd, John Kohner and Adam Seidel received endorsements from the Eden Prairie News.[6]

Aliweyd also received endorsements from Eden Prairie City Council members Ron Case and Sherry Butcher Wickstrom, as well as former Eden Prairie Board of Education members Carol Bomben, Jan Eian, Greg Olson and Kim Ross.[7] Seidel received an endorsement from Eden Prairie Board of Education member Holly Link.[8]
