Noteworthy cases
Hold-up at Joe's Crab Shack
Benefield presided over a case involving a coordinated armed robbery of Joe's Crab Shack in Morrow, Georgia. Three of the defendants accepted plea deals that landed them a variety of punishments, from probation to prison time. The others were convicted of dozens of criminal counts, from aggravated assault to armed robbery, some for multiple life sentences. One of the perpetrators, Brinae Brown, was pregnant at the time of the trial and during the beginning of her prison sentence, which Benefield called "a horrible situation." Brown had been an employee of the restaurant, and had pretended to be a victim of the crime as it occurred.[5]
