Education

Barnes was born in Natchez, Mississippi. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1982 with degrees in classical civilizations and English. She earned her J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1985 and her LL.M. from the University of Cambridge in 1997.[1]

Career

Barnes began her legal career in 1985. She practiced with the firm Mitchell, McNutt and Sams for over 18 years, concentrating on the areas of appellate practice, real estate, healthcare, employment discrimination, section 1983 litigation and professional liability defense. She was appointed to the Court of Appeals in July 2004 and elected in November 2006.[1] She became chief judge of the court on February 1, 2019.[2]
