The state of California held elections in 2015. In California, school board elections were held for 125 seats in 49 school districts, all of which feature among America's largest school districts by enrollment. Seven of the top one hundred cities by population also held elections in 2015.
This was a lighter year for California as 2014 saw elections for U.S. House, state executives, state senate, state house, statewide ballot measures, local ballot measures, school boards and state courts.

Four seats on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education were up for primary election on March 3, 2015, and general election on May 19, 2015. All four incumbents ran for re-election, with three of them facing opposition.
The district administration was recently disrupted due to the former superintendent, Dr. John Deasy, resigning on October 15, 2014.[1] Other issues included a federal grand jury investigation into a technology program that was partially started in 2014 and divisive contract negotiations with United Teachers Los Angeles.[2][3][4]
The Los Angeles Unified School District was the second-largest school district in the United States and served 659,639 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[5]

Primary information
- California uses a top-two primary system, in which all candidates appear on the same ballot. The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, move on to the general election. In states that do not use a top-two system, all parties are usually able to put forward a candidate for the general election if they choose to.[6][7]
Unlike the top-two format used in some states (Louisiana and Georgia special elections for example), a general election between the top-two candidates in California occurs regardless of whether the top candidate received 50% of the vote in the first round of elections.
As of June 2025, California was one of five states to use a top-two primary system, or a variation of the top-two system. See here for more information.
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.
Historical voter turnout
2014
In 2014, California saw 30.8 percent of eligible voters turn out to vote in the November general election.[8]
2012
In 2012, California saw 55.8 percent of eligible voters turn out to vote in the November general election and 22.9 percent in the primary election.[9][10]
