California Proposition 4 was on the ballot as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment in California on June 6, 1972. It was approved.

A “yes” vote supported requiring the legislature to provide an open primary for the office of President of the United States with candidates' names who are recognized candidates throughout the United State of California or who appear on the ballot because of a petition to do so.

A “no” vote opposed requiring the legislature to provide an open primary for the office of President of the United States with candidates' names who are recognized candidates throughout the United State of California or who appear on the ballot because of a petition to do so.

The ballot summary for this measure was:

Legislative Constitutional Amendment. Requires Legislature to provide for open presidential primary in which candidates on ballot are those found by Secretary of State to be recognized candidates throughout nation or California for office of President of the United States and such candidates whose names are placed on ballot by petition. Excludes any candidate who has filed affidavit that he is not a candidate.
