An effort in Kinderhook Township, Michigan, to recall Town Clerk Cynthia Carpenter was initiated in December 2017. Recall organizer Michael Exelby, who faced Carpenter in the 2016 Republican primary, submitted petition language against Carpenter to the Branch County Election Commission on December 13, 2017.[1] Petitioners submitted enough signatures by the deadline on February 2, 2018, moving the recall forward. The recall was scheduled for May 8, but Carpenter resigned in advance of the recall election. Ginger Kessler was qualified to run against Carpenter in the recall election and was scheduled to replace Kessler on April 30, 2018, after the resignation.[2]
The recall language against Carpenter detailed a mileage reimbursement, violating the Freedom of Information Act, replacing deputy clerks without notifying the township board, and refusing to share information with the treasurer.[3]
