Bruce Jacobus
Bruce Waldron Jacobus was a judge of the Florida Fifth District Court of Appeal. He retired from the court on May 31, 2013, but continues to serve as a senior judge.[1][2]
Jacobus was appointed to the Fifth District Court of Appeal in August 2009 by Governor Charlie Crist and was retained by voters on November 2, 2010.[3] [4]
In Crist's press release announcing Jacobus' appointment, he stated: "Judge Jacobus’ 22 years as a private practitioner, along with his time as a circuit judge, have given him varied experience that will serve him well on the appellate court".[5]
Appointment controversy
Judges for appellate courts in Florida are vetted by a nominating commission that gives recommendations to the governor, who then appoints one of the nominees. Crist returned the list of nominees for the Fifth District to the nominating commission, saying that the lack of recommendations for qualified non-white judges was unacceptable, and requested a new list of candidates. The commission responded by re-submitting the same list of candidates. Retiring judge Robert Pleus sued Crist to require him to name an appointment to succeed him. The Supreme Court ruled that the governor was constitutionally obligated to make a selection from the list provided by the commission, after which Jacobus received his appointment.[6][7]
Education
Jacobus earned his bachelor’s degree and his J.D. from the University of Florida.[5]
Career
Jacobus was in private practice from 1973 to 1995. In 1995, Jacobus was appointed to the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, presiding over criminal, civil, family, dependency and probate cases, until his appointment to the Florida Fifth District Court of Appeal in 2009. Jacobus retired from the Court of Appeal in 2013 and serves as a senior judge.[8]
2010 election
Jacobus was retained on November 2, 2010 with 63.69 percent of voters in favor.[3][9]
