Three seats on the Alachua County School Board were up for general election on August 26, 2014. Incumbent Gunnar F. Paulson faced and defeated challenger Philoron A. Wright in the District 3 race. Rob Hyatt and Jancie Vinson both sought to replace Carol Oyenarte, who did not file for re-election in District 5. Hyatt won the open seat. District 1 incumbent April M. Griffin won re-election without opposition for a second term.

Alachua County Public Schools is based in Gainesville, the county seat of Alachua County, Florida. Alachua County is home to 253,451 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Alachua County Public Schools was the 26th-largest school district in Florida, serving 27,480 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Alachua County outperformed the rest of Florida in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 41.2 percent of Alachua County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.2 percent for Florida as a whole. The median household income in Alachua County was $42,818 compared to $47,309 for the state of Florida. The poverty rate in Alachua County was 23.8 percent compared to 15.6 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Alachua County School Board consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Each member represents a specific geographic district. There was a general election on August 26, 2014. No runoff election was necessary.

Candidates for the school board filed for the election by June 20, 2014. The county's elections office hosted early voting for the general election at various locations from August 16, 2014, to August 23, 2014. The early voting window for the runoff election ran from October 25, 2014, to November 1, 2014. The last day to request a mailed absentee ballot in the general election was August 20, 2014.[4]

Endorsements

Gunnar F. Paulson and Rob Hyatt earned endorsements from the Alachua County Education Association, North Central Florida Central Labor Council (NCFCLC) and the Human Rights Council of North Central Florida.[5][6]
