Eligibility to Vote
Primary election

Alaska was one of 21 states to use a strictly closed primary system. Voters were required to register to vote in the primary by July 29, 2012, which was 30 days before the primary took place.[1] Alaska holds closed caucuses for both parties, but voters may change party affiliation at polls or caucus. General election

The deadline to register to vote was 30 days prior to the election day, which in 2012 was October 7.[2]

Voting absentee

All voters are eligible to vote absentee/by-mail in Alaska. There are no special eligibility requirements for voting absentee/by-mail.[4]
If a voter is already registered to vote, an absentee ballot application must be received by elections officials at least 10 days prior to the election. If a voter has not yet registered to vote, or needs to update voter registration information, an absentee/mail-in ballot application must be received at least 30 days before the election.[4]
Voting early

Alaska is one of 34 states that permits early voting with no specific restrictions as to who can vote early. Early voting begins 15 days before an election and ends on Election Day.[5]
