Noteworthy events
Virginia Parole Board investigation and extended leave (2020-2021)
Prior to joining the court, Bennett was the chairwoman of the Virginia Parole Board, an organization under investigation by the Office of the State Inspector General (OSIG) since 2020. The OSIG found violations of policy and law in regards to releasing parolees from supervision. Bennett released over 100 parolees from supervision without recommendations from their parole officers.[1]
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Bennett went on extended leave in April 2021. Amy Burnham, the clerk of the Virginia Beach Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, did not comment on the reason for Bennett's leave.[1] Jeffrey Breit, Bennett's attorney, said the parole board did nothing wrong and that he thought the investigation was "a Willie Horton attempt by Republicans to scare Virginians."[3]
