Abby Voelker was a candidate for the 17th District Court in Kentucky. Voelker was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Biography

Voelker graduated from Campbell County High School. She obtained a B.A. from the University of Kentucky and a J.D. from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law.[1]

As of her run for office in 2016, Voelker owned her own legal practice. Her professional experience includes work on cases involving juvenile matters, city and county ordinances, misdemeanors, traffic offenses, probate of wills, felony preliminary hearings, small claims, civil cases, voluntary and involuntary mental commitments, and domestic violence and abuse.[1]

Voelker has served in leadership positions at her local church, as a youth coach, and as a member of the board of Holly Hill Children's Services.[1]

Kentucky held nonpartisan elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on May 17, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was January 26, 2016.[2] Incumbent Cameron J. Blau defeated Joseph Grimme, Abby Voelker, Josh Hayden, and Andrea Janovic in the Kentucky 17th District Court general election.[3]

Selection method

The judges of the Kentucky District Courts are elected in nonpartisan elections. They serve four-year terms and must run for re-election if they wish to serve again.[4][5]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[4]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a resident of the represented district for at least two years; and
  • licensed to practice law for at least two years.
