|I am a staunch supporter of individual rights and free markets.
- Property rights are individual rights. Just as one's freedom of speech is not enjoyed at the mercy of majority rule, the fruits of one's labor should not be either.
- It is not the proper role of government to protect people from themselves. Conduct which directly harms no other party should not be prohibited by the government.
- One is only responsible for the consequences of one's own actions. I strongly oppose any efforts, such as those undertaken by Mayor Elorza, to impute any responsibility for Rhode Island's role in the slave trade to current residents.
Too many people are charged and punished for victimless crimes. All such crimes should be taken off the books, thereby increasing individual liberty and significantly lightening the burden on the taxpayer-funded criminal justice system.
I would like to be remembered as a public servant who consistently fought for his constituents' ability to determine the course of their own lives, free from governmental interference.
It is unlikely that Rhode Island will have to draw a district map as a result of the 2020 census, as we are likely to lose our second seat in the House of Representatives.
