Three of the five seats on the Wilkes County Schools Board of Education were up for at-large general election on March 15, 2016. Incumbents Hardin Kennedy III and Darren Shumate faced four challengers on the ballot: Gary Blevins, Larry Pendry, Leslie Settle Barnes and T. Kirk Walker. Incumbent Rick Lankford did not file to seek re-election.[1] Only one of the incumbents—Darren Shumate—won re-election, and was joined in his victory by two newcomers: T. Kirk Walker and Leslie Settle Barnes.

The Wilkes County Schools Board of Education consists of five members elected at large to four-year terms. There was no primary election and the general election was held on March 15, 2016. Two seats were on the ballot in 2014 and three seats were up for election in 2016. Candidates were required to file for the race by December 21, 2016.

Campaign finance
School board candidates
School board candidates in North Carolina are required to file campaign finance reports to their county's board of elections unless the candidate:
(1) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in contributions, and
(2) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in loans, and
(3) Does not spend more than one thousand dollars ($1,000).[2]
The first quarter campaign finance deadline was on February 29, 2016.

. Wilkes County Schools is located in Wilkes County, North Carolina.. Wilkes County was home to 68,838 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] The district was the 37th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,863 students.[4]
Demographics
Wilkes County underperformed in comparison to North Carolina as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2009 to 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 12.5 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.3 percent for the state. The median household income in the county was $33,159 compared to $46,334 for the state. The poverty rate in the county was 22.7 percent compared to 17.5 percent for state as a whole.[3]
