Three seats on the Walton County Board of Education are up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, to determine the Republican candidate for District 2. Incumbent Jeremy V. Kilburn defeated challenger Charles J. Wilson III in the District 2 primary. Kilburn ran unopposed in the general election as there was no Democratic candidate. Board members Lynn E. Hill (D) and Tom Gibson (R) are unopposed for Districts 1 and 5, respectively.

Walton County School District is located in Walton County, Georgia. The county seat of Walton County is Monroe, Georgia. Walton County was home to 85,754 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Walton County School District was the 26th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 13,337 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Walton County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.9 percent of Walton County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Walton County was $52,062 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Walton County was 13.8 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Walton County Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Each member is elected to a specific geographic district. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[3]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]

The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. Walton County residents voted in elections for three seats on the county commission. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. The May 20, 2014, election also selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. The board election shared the general election ballot with the same races.[6]
