Primary: A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. In Iowa, state law provides for a closed primary where every voter must be affiliated with a party in order to participate in its primary. However, a voter can change his or her political party affiliation on Election Day, creating what is effectively an open primary.[6]
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.
Incumbent: The election filled the Class 3 Senate seat held by Chuck Grassley (R). He was first elected in 1980. Grassley announced in September 2013 that he would seek re-election in 2016.[7] In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Grassley stated that he began planning for his 2016 re-election in early 2014.
He emphasized that, due to the increasing costs of running campaigns, he had been working more intensively with the Republican Party nationally to acquire more funding. Grassley said he expected more support for his re-election due to Iowa being the first state in the Presidential Caucus. "When I have what you might call house parties or, or fundraising parties in homes in Iowa, I think I can call on a lot of presidential candidates that’ll help me get out a big crowd," he said.[8]

Endorsements
Rob Hogg
- The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club - "The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Rob Hogg for Senate and we are confident that he will continue to be a champion in the fight to protect the health and well-being of Iowa’s families. In the Senate, Hogg will continue to protect our air and water, work to expand access to public lands and parks, and take on corporate polluters."[18]
Patty Judge
- The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) - "Patty Judge is a farmer, a nurse, and a terrific public servant who is a proven leader for Iowa’s middle class families. Patty has spent her career working for Iowa and will continue that work in the United States Senate. Iowans are frustrated that Senate Republicans refuse to do their jobs on the Supreme Court nomination and want a Senator that will put their interests first – Patty will be that Senator. The DSCC is proud to support Patty Judge in this campaign."
