The Tennessee Commissioner of Insurance is a nonpartisan state executive position in the Tennessee state government.
The commissioner is head of the Department of Commerce and Insurance. The insurance division is in charge of enforcing the state's insurance laws and supervising insurance companies and other licensed entities in the state.[1]

The current Tennessee Commissioner of Insurance is Carter Lawrence (nonpartisan). Lawrence assumed office in 2020.

The Department of Commerce and Insurance, with the commissioner as its chief officer, is established in Title 56, Chapter 1, Part 2 of the Tennessee Code.

Qualifications
Title 56, Chapter 1, Part 203 of the Tennessee Code prohibits any individual with a financial stake in an insurance company that is regulated by the Department of Commerce and Insurance from serving as insurance commissioner:
The commissioner shall not be financially interested, directly or indirectly, in any insurance corporation subject to the supervision of the department.[3] |

Duties
Title 4, Chapter 3, Part 111 of the Tennessee Code specifies that the insurance commissioner serves as chief executive officer of the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance:
There shall be a chief executive officer of each of the administrative departments of state government created by § 4-3-101, which shall be as follows: ... |
Title 4, Chapter 3, Parts 1304-1306 of the Tennessee Code lay out the specific responsibilities of the Department of Commerce and Insurance, including:
- Carrying out administrative duties related to state regulatory boards,
- Regulating the safety of retirement homes, and
- Handling the state's professional certification programs.
